SUBSET SUMS IN Zp

چکیده
Let Zp be the finite field of prime order p and A be a subset of Zp. We prove several sharp results about the following two basic questions: (1) When can one represent zero as a sum of distinct elements of A ? (2) When can one represent every element of Zp as a sum of distinct elements of A ?

Subset Sums modulo a Prime

متن کاملRestricted sums in a field
Let Zp = Z/pZ stand for the field of all residue classes modulo prime p. In 1964 P. Erdös and H. Heilbronn (cf. [EH] and [Gu]) conjectured that for each nonempty subset A of Zp there are at least min{p, 2|A| − 3} residue classes modulo p that can be written as the sum of two distinct elements of A. This had been open for thirty years until J. A. Dias da Silva and Y. O. Hamidoune ([DH]) proved t...
متن کاملLinear Methods Which Sum Sequences of Bounded Variation
A complex sequence {zp} is said to be of bounded variation provided 2|zp —zP+i\ < oo. In this paper we show that a matrix which sums every sequence of bounded variation also sums a convergent sequence not of bounded variation (Theorem 1). Indeed, if M is a countable set of matrices, each of which sums every sequence of bounded variation, then there is a convergent sequence not of bounded variat...

متن کاملFour-manifolds which admit Zp ×Zp actions
We show that the simply-connected four-manifolds which admit locally linear, homologically trivial Zp ×Zp actions are homeomorphic to connected sums of ±CP 2 and S × S (with one exception: pseudofree Z3 × Z3 actions on the Chern manifold), and also establish an equivariant decomposition theorem. This generalizes results from a 1970 paper by Orlik and Raymond about torus actions, and complements...
